Tables and figures

  1. Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively and provided with concise captions.
  2. All figures and tables should be referenced in the text, e.g. (see Figure 5). Please do not use relative indicators such as “see the table below”, or “in this table: ...”.
  3. All tables and figures have to fit the text area. Notice that the margins in the journal are quite wide.
  4. Use the ‘insert tables’ command on the computer and not tabs. Avoid shading.


  • NJES uses footnotes not endnotes
  • Do not insert page numbers in your final formatting
  • Quotations in the text should be referred to in the text, e.g. (Balfour 1965: 25).
  • NJES uses long dashes (no space before or after)
  • To mark an omission in cited text, NJES uses square brackets, e.g. [. . .]



Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. We are in the process of changing platforms for the journal. As a result we would invite you to submit your article via email to instead of via this online submission system. Please make sure the article complies with the points listed below.
  2. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  3. When available, the URLs to access references online are provided, including those for open access versions of the reference. The URLs are ready to click (e.g.,
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 11-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review) have been followed.
  7. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
